Austin Lunch Time Conversation - November 6, 2013 - Does Social Media Create Better Connections?

Networking Revisited: 10 years of Social Media...
Are we better connected?

Join the Austin Business Journal for a spirited discussion with three of Austin's best known experts on the topic of "Networking". Thom Singer, Patti DeNucci and Marny Lifshen will lead a conversation about how Social Media has impacted how people make, keep and grow their business relationships over the past decade.

LinkedIn and MySpace first appeared on the scene in 2003, and were soon followed by Facebook (2004), Twitter (2005), YouTube (2006) and countless other social tools. The iPhone arrived in 2007 and the addition of mobile accessibility changed the whole thing.

While we are only one "like", "link", "follow" or "share" away from connecting to anyone on the planet, are we better connected? Does the average person have deeper relationships? While there are many examples of those who have harnessed the social media wave, there are also many who feel the whole thing is still confusing.

Do not miss the opportunity to be part of this interactive social media review. Sign up today (space is limited).

Entrepreneur Xtravaganza! This Friday (Austin)

The Austin Business Journal is hosting the "Entrepreneur Xtravaganza" this Friday (All Day).

The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Austin from 8 AM until 6 PM. A great line up of business speakers will share their stories and inspire everyone to go out and achieve more.

You can still register for this unique event. It will prove to be a great way to spend your Friday. Bring your whole team for a dose of motivation and a map toward success.

The speakers include:

NEAL PETERSEN- No Barriers- Only Solutions
Adventurer, award winning author and international keynote speaker. South African-born Neal Petersen is an adventurer, solo around-the-world racing yachtsman, businessman and international speaker. PBS airs a documentary about his life – “No Barriers – the Story of Neal Petersen”, and he wrote the award winning auto-biography, Journey of a Hope Merchant. Petersen has faced many challenges in life – poverty, discrimination, physical disability and other insurmountable barriers – and he always responded by turning them into opportunities and solutions. His life experiences show that imagination coupled with determination to achieve, can break through the toughest challenges. Neal completed the 1998-99 “Around Alone”, a 27,000 mi yacht race, 9 months at sea ~ alone; in a yacht he designed and built himself. In sharing his high-impact, unique and extraordinary adventure, Neal delivers a powerful message that “In Life There Are No Barriers – Only Solutions!”

KYLE MACDONALD- One Red Paperclip
Originally from Belcarra, British Columbia, Canada, Kyle MacDonald has planted more than one hundred thousand trees, delivered more than one thousand pizzas, but eaten only one scorpion. He has also traded one red paperclip for a house only once. Inspired by “Bigger and Better,” a game he played as a child, MacDonald came up with the idea of trading objects over the Internet. He posted a red paper clip on Craig’s List and waited for offers. The buzz was almost instant, showing how a unique story can capture the minds and imaginations of people all over the world, and create a movement unto itself. He has made hundreds of media appearances including, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Hour, MSNBC, BBC, CBS, CNN, CBC, City TV, Global, and has been featured in USA Today, Maclean’s, The New York Times, In Touch Magazine, VH1, MTV, The National Examiner, Reader’s Digest, LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and The Toronto Star, among others. When he’s not stealing a flag from the Prime Minister’s office or promoting Alberta Beef by hitch-hiking in a parade, you might find him leaving his wallet in El Segundo or hanging out in Bangkok modeling Italian Soccer jerseys to fund 4am Red-Bull and Rum-fueled urban hitchhikes. He also enjoys writing third-person biographies for his speaker intro. His mom still cuts his hair.

RICK SAPIO- The Simplicity Imperative
MIT Gathering of Titans, Chairman. Richard (Rick) Sapio, 46, is a lifelong entrepreneur who started his first company, a bicycle repair shop, after the death of his father, when he was 14 years old. Since then he has founded more than 20 companies. After college, Rick worked in the investment industry, and traded distressed bonds. Shortly thereafter, he became the youngest partner at his firm; after making more than $1 million in commissions and $100 million in transactions in one year, while he was still in his mid-twenties. At the age of 30, Rick started an investment holding company, that has made more than 50 investments in the past 16 years. Rick invests in private companies, public companies, and real estate. His firm currently has more than 30 direct and indirect holdings; which include being the founder of six separate publicly-traded funds, the founding GP of a private equity fund, and 11 start-ups. His firm is also an active LP in 10 healthcare/medical device investments. Rick was the President of the Dallas Chapter of Entrepreneurs Organization for two years, and is currently a member of YPO. He is the four-time Chairman of MIT’s “Gathering of Titans” program in Boston. In the past two years, his passion for business turnarounds, has enabled him to successfully turnaround two midsized private companies.

JACK DALY- The Keys to Growing Robust Sales and Profits
Jack Daly is an expert in sales and sales management inspiring audiences to take action. He brings 20+ years of field proven experience from a starting base with Arthur Andersen to the CEO level of several national companies. Jack has participated at the senior executive level on four de novo businesses, two of which he sold to the Wall Street Firms of Solomon Brothers and First Boston. As the head of sales, he led forces numbering in the thousands, operating out of hundreds of offices nationwide. In 1985, Jack relocated to California and started a mortgage company. Jack Daly speaks from experience and has helped thousands of individuals and organizations reach their full potential.

RANDY COHEN- Ticket to the Limit - how passion, purpose and performance can transform your life & business into an amazing adventure!
President & CEO, TicketCity. Randy founded TicketCity in 1990 and has since grown it to be one of the most successful companies in the secondary ticket market. Under Randy’s guidance, TicketCity has developed into one of the largest and most prominent ticketing companies, won numerous awards, and has been named one of the Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies in Austin six times. Austin Business Journal - Subscription Special

I have partnered with the Austin Business Journal for a series of business seminars over the past year. Several hundred people have attended the "Smart Series" presentations since June 2009. At each event the ABJ offers a special price to those who subscribe to the paper while present at the event. They offer one, two and three year specials on subscriptions.

The Austin Business Journal is a great resource for anyone who does business in Austin, and it is very cost effective. For $86 for one year or $182 for three years (special price) you get the weekly paper, online access, and the Book of Lists. Plus they host a variety of educational, networking and awards programs every year that bring together the "Whose Who" of the Austin, Texas business community.

This is an easy product for me to endorse, as I read it every week. (Full disclosure, I do receive compensation for my partnership with the ABJ... but I have been actively utilizing the value of the paper for over 15 years).

Update on Austin Speaking Events

Before my presentation last week to the Launch Pad Job Club I appeared on KEYE Channel 42's "We Are Austin" to promote the event, as well as talk about my books and the overall importance of networking to a successful career.

to watch the interview I did with KEYE's Jason Wheeler.

On Friday I spoke to a standing room only weekly meeting of the Launch Pad Job Club. It was a great event. I am sorry there are soooo many people in the job market (over 300 people were in attendance for my presentation), but if any Austin companies are looking for great talent, I can assure you that there are qualified enthusiastic people actively seeking employment in a variety of industries.

This event was my 49th presentation of the year (my goal was 52 talks in 2010, so we will achieve that by year end). I especially enjoyed this audience because of their attitude. I met several people following the talk who are fired up about finding that next opportunity!!!

If you are currently in the job market in Austin, you should get involved with this job club. Kathy has done a great job in creating an atmosphere that encourages both education and support for those seeking employment.

SAVE THE DATE - If you live in Austin and have never seen me speak before I encourage you to come to the Norris Conference Center on Tuesday, December 8th from 7:30 - 9:00 AM for an informational, educational and motivational seminar.

The topic will focus on how to get the most out of your business relationships in the holiday season and into the new year. With the invitations to holiday parties about to hit your inbox, a little planning can go a long way in maximizing the power of your networking activities. Additionally, the new year brings with it a sense of a clean slate, and a perfect time to reach out to clients, prospects, referral sources and others.

to register now. This event is sponsored by the Austin Business Journal and will most likely be my last open presentation in 2009. Share this information with friends, co-workers, etc... sign up today while space is still available.

Social Media Seminar This Tuesday - REGISTER TODAY!

On Tuesday morning (September 15, 2009) I will be presenting a seminar in Austin, Texas with Steve Harper. The topic is "Leveraging Social Media" and it should prove to be a great discussion.

Do you ever wonder if the whole social media thing is a fad? Do you get nervous at the thought of updating your Facebook "status"? Do you come up with excuses why you have never blogged? Are you Linked-out of LinkedIn? And does the whole concept of Twitter make you run from the building screaming?

Or maybe you are a social media wiz-kid... but everyone else in your office thinks you are from Mars. (sound familiar? Drag your co-workers to this meeting!!!).

Do you work for (or own) a business and you worry that your tardy arrival to the social media game is just a big invitation for your competition to take over your industry?

The breakfast seminar is being hosted by the Austin Business Journal, and this is the first time that Steve and I have ever presented on the same stage. We have been working hard to develop an informative, entertaining and inspiring program.

Please come and join us.

Powerful Women

The 15th Annual Austin Business Journal "2009 Profiles In Power Awards" honored 25 Central Texas Woman of Influence.

The sold-out luncheon featured local celebrity Ambassador Karen Hughes as the keynote speaker. While I have lived in Austin for two decades, I had never had the chance to see Mrs. Hughes speak before. WOW. She had a great way of blending her internal government experience with her Texas charm. Great presentation!

Three good friends of mine were amongst the women of distinction who were honored this year. I would like to use this space on my blog to tell them CONGRATULATIONS.

Marny Lifshen. Marny is a long-time friend and the co-author of "Some Assembly Required: A Networking Guide for Women". She is a communications consultant and a professional speaker who is being hired by corporate women's initiatives programs throughout the country to help inspire professionals to excel.

Kerri Qunell. Kerri is the Vice President of Communications for the Capitol Area Food Bank. I have known her for over 15 years. Early in our careers we shared an office when we both worked at the Austin Chamber of Commerce. It was a small office, and she put up with my loud voice... which is the sign of a good friend!

Ellen Wood. Ellen is the co-founder and CEO of vcfo. I worked for Ellen for two years and admired the way she has grown her company in good times and bad. Before I worked at vcfo, Ellen and I had known each other when we were both on the board of TEXCHANGE. I learned a lot from working with her, and am pleased to have her as a friend.

Congratulations to Marny, Kerri, Ellen, and the other 22 winners of the 2009 Profiles in Power Award.
