Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
My friend Karen Jacobson has just released her first Christmas CD, Destination Christmas. The album is full of original and classic holiday tunes, and I recommend you download these songs to get you ready for the season.
Many of you know Karen's voice from your GPS and Siri. Yep, she is The GPS Girl. I have known her for a few years through the National Speakers Association, but had no idea she was such a talented singer / performer. It is common that we know people, but never really know all their talents.
Wait, you are stuck on my mention that Karen is the voice of your GPS and Siri? Yes, she gives directions in over 400 million GPS and smart phones around the world.. (before meeting her I had never thought about the fact that someone had to record all those words that Siri says). She has a great voice for telling you where to turn your car, and she can sing!!!
Karen Jacobsen is a speaker for organizations that want to both entertain and inspire their people to perform in a world class fashion, and "Recalculate" when things do not go as planned (I find it clever that the title of one of her most popular keynotes is "Recalculating").
When I saw that she had released a new Christmas CD I knew I had to share this on a "Cool Things My Friends Do" post as week #137. I am also going to ask her to be a guest on the "Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do" podcast in the next few weeks so she can share her story with my podcast audience.

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #136): Think Big - Act Bigger with Jeffrey Hayzlett
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
I am late on getting this "Cool Things My Friends Do" released, but I cannot hide the kudos for this book. It is a MUST READ for everyone, especially those who listen to my podcast, as you know the topic of re-invention and raising yourself to a higher level of production is a theme I believe matters to all in a world full of mediocrity.

It is a MUST READ for everyone, especially those who listen to my podcast, as you know the topic of re-invention and raising yourself to a higher level of production is a theme I believe matters to all in a world full of mediocrity.
Jeffrey Hayzlett is a global business celebrity, former CMO of Kodak, author, speaker, prime time Bloomberg Television host and is the chairman of the C-Suite Network. I know Jeffrey from the National Speakers Association, and have spent time chatting with him at several conferences (and he has been a guest on my podcast). Jeffrey is one who always gives his time to anyone, and has been a bit of a silent mentor to me since I met him last year.
Recently he released his second book, Think Big, Act Bigger: The Rewards of Being Relentless. In this book he empowers business leaders to tie their visions to actions, advancing themselves past competitors and closer to their business dream. Drawing upon his own business back stories he sharing examples from the many leaders featured on “The C-Suite with Jeffrey Hayzlett,” Jeffrey imparts ten core lessons that dare readers to own who they are as a leader and/or company, define where they want to go, and fearlessly do what it takes to get there—caring less about conventional wisdom, re-framing limitations, and steamrolling obstacles as they go.
Being a consumer of many business and life-related books, I can tell you this one is an awesome inspirational read. I am so happy to have this book and Jeffrey featured as week #136 of "Cool Things My Friends Do". Check it out.

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #135) - Make it Rain with Events, by Scott Ingram
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
My friend Scott Ingram has launched a podcast for people in the Meetings and Events Industry.
The program launched as a free audio version of his book "Make Rain with Events", where he read each of the chapters (I am one of the contributing authors in the book), and now he has begun interviewing people who are experts at creating amazing "conference attendee experiences".
I know first hand that launching a podcast is hard work, and keeping it going is even more difficult. Scott has begun a great journey in providing this podcast to Event Professionals. Those who work in the world of conferences are some of the hardest working people I know, and having a podcast available that is full of usable content is going to be awesome.
You can find the "Make it Rain with Events" podcast on iTunes.
Check it out. It is great. I am happy to have him as week #135 of "Cool Things My Friends Do".

Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
This video is my friend Jessica Pettitt delivering a short talk at Influence 2015. This is worth watching, and one you may want to share.
We all judge people, and she says that is okay. But Jess advises that when you write a story about someone.... "Leave Room For Edits".
Awesome.

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #133) - 51 Professional Speakers Earn The CSP
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
The National
Speakers Association
Certifies 51 Speaking Professionals
The National Speakers Association (NSA), the leading organization
for the professional speaking industry, is proud to
announce 51 professional speakers have earned the Certified Speaking
Professional® (CSP) designation in 2015.
And the cool part.... Many of these people are my personal friends!!!
Established
in 1980, the CSP is the speaking profession’s international measure of speaking
experience and skill. Little more than 12 percent of the speakers worldwide
hold this professional designation. I earned this designation in 2014 and am very proud of this achievement.... which makes it more fun to welcome other committed speakers into the club.
The
CSP designation is conferred by NSA on accomplished professional speakers who
have earned it by meeting strict criteria. CSPs must document a proven track
record of continuing speaking experience and expertise, as well as a commitment
to ongoing education, outstanding client service, and ethical behavior. The 2015
class of CSPs was honored during a ceremony on July 18 at the annual NSA
Convention in Washington, D.C.
"The
Certified Speaking Professional® (CSP) is the highest designation that can be
earned by a member of the National Speakers Association or another association
of the Global Speakers Federation,” says 2014-2015 NSA President Shep Hyken,
CSP, CPAE. “CSP is earned as a result of experience, education and competency
in the speaking industry, which also includes input from clients and a CSP
Review Panel process. When clients hire a professional speaker who has
earned the CSP designation, they can be assured the speaker brings to the table
a high level of experience and professionalism.”
Yep, it is a big deal, and it is so cool to honor all the recipients and some of my dear friends on week #133 of "Cool Things My Friends Do".

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #132) - Gary Rifkin wins the Cavett Award
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
The sealed envelope was opened and a name was read. The moment of anticipation and silence was broken with a huge cheer from the crowd of 1700 members of the National Speakers Association. Everyone in the Marriott ballroom jumped to their feet in applause and fits pumps.
Gary Rifkin had been named the recipient of the 2015 Cavett Award, and nobody could think of a more deserving person to have this moment.
The Cavett Award is the highest honor the National Speakers Association bestows on its members. It is presented annually to a professional speaker whose accomplishments over the years have reflected outstanding credit, respect, honor and admiration on NSA and the speaking profession.
Gary Rifkin has been involved in the training and speaking business since 1987, when he began as a popular speaker at major colleges and universities. He has since catapulted into some of the most recognized and respected organizations in the world. Gary is one of those people who showers love on the people around him. He works hard behind the scenes to make others look awesome, and in my time as a member of NSA he has become one of those people who you always want to see at convention, because he makes you feel better just by being in the room.

Today my friend Jason Kotecki's releases his new book: Penguins Can't Fly: +39 Other Rules That Don't Exist. That is always a cool thing, and I am excited to feature him on week #130 of "Cool Things My Friends Do".
Life is supposed to be fun. We knew this instinctively as kids, but somehow forgot on the way to adulthood. We got busy and overwhelmed, started valuing things that don't matter, and learned to follow the rules that don't even exist:
- hate mondays
- only celebrate when the calendar gives you permission
- don't make a mess
- don't play hooky
- hide your weirdness
- hide your wrinkles
- care what other people think
Following these so-called rules is a terrific way to stress you out, sap your energy, and ensure a boring life. But there's a better way. In his enlightening book, author and artist Jason Kotecki uncovers some of the most useless rules so you can shift perspective and start seeing the world with wonder once again.
Jason says: It's time to stop living by someone else's rules. Your life is a story, and a short one at that. Make it a good one.

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #128) - Rory Vaden's TEDx Talk
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
My first "Cool Things My Friends Do" blog post (in March 2012) was about a friend who did a TEDx Talk. That one post has now spurred 128 posts about things people I know are doing to make the world say "wow".
My friend Rory Vaden just released the link to his TEDx Talk from TEDx Douglasville.
Everything you know about time-management is wrong. In this challenging and counter-intuitive video, Self-Discipline Strategist and New York Times bestselling author Rory Vaden, shows you why you can’t solve today’s time-management challenges with yesterday’s time-management strategies. More importantly he explains why procrastinating on purpose is the key to being able to Multiply your time.

The premise of the video is they utilize a ton on YouTube sensations as the actors in the video. It is fun, and your favorite cats, goats, bumbling beauty queens, and dancing Judsons all have cameos.
I am happy to share this with you and to have Judson as week #127 of Cool Things My Friends Do. I have known Judson for several years and he is one of the nicest people you will ever encounter (and a great inspirational speaker, in addition to having all the dance moves).

Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
Today my friend Neen James became a citizen of the United States of America. Now that deserves a post on "Cool Things My Friends Do" (Week #126).

This is not the first time Neen has been featured on my blog in a "Cool Things My Friends Do" post. She also was early guest on the "Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do" podcast. She does lots of cool things, so it is not a surprise (Click below to read or hear her past accolades):
More than a decade ago Neen and her husband moved to Pennsylvania. Together they have built a great life and it is exciting that this "Happy Little Aussie" (her popular hashtag on Twitter is #HappyLittleAussie) has decided that America is forever her adopted home.
I was excited to see her announcement on Facebook today and happy to welcome her to the "club".

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #125) - Dr. Deborah Gilboa
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
It has been some time since I have written a "Cool Things My Friends Do" post. This is due to my focus on the "Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do" Podcast. Today I am sharing this new post and also promoting an upcoming podcast interview. In this "Cool Things" I am writing about a new friend (we just met via a Twitter introduction), who will soon be a guest on the show. While the podcast interview is about a month away, I could not wait to share some information about this fascinating person.
Dr. Deborah Gilboa (popularly known as Dr G) is a medical doctor, author, parenting expert, mother of four, and a keynote speaker. Although we have not met yet in person, we had a great phone conversation, and I was impressed with her deep entrepreneurial spirit. This woman does not sit back and hope things will happen, she goes out and creates opportunities.
It is not often you meet a doctor who earned her undergraduate degree in Drama and then worked for Second City. But that is because Dr. G is not average.
In addition to an active medical practice, she speaks regularly on parenting and youth development. Deborah appears often in parenting publication (ie: Parents Magazine) and on television and radio. She has also authored three activity books based on her 3R’s of Parenting; Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. These “little books” are popular go-to, user-friendly parenting advice. Teach Resilience: Raising Kids Who Can Launch!, Teach Responsibility: Empower Kids with a Great Work Ethic, and her latest, Teach Respect: That’s My Kid! were designed for today’s busy parents with age specific tips and ideas for building character in kids.
Check out her YouTube Channel for awesome short videos on parenting topics. In these short videos she shares useful tips on a variety of topics. Her straight-forward style is delightful, and I wish I had heard some of these tips when my own kids were younger.
I look forward to having Dr G as a guest on the podcast and getting to share more of her story with my listeners. Subscribe to the show now on iTunes so that you will be alerted to when her show appears in mid-May.

Beth is seeking 200 supporters (she already has raised the necessary money in a very successful campaign... how cool is that?). For as little as $1 you can support her cause (she is at 109 supporters at the time of this blog post), but at the $15 level you will get a copy of the book, and have YOUR NAME listed in the book!!! Come on, show her some love!!! I pledged $15.
Let me tell you more about Beth Ziesenis.... she is a giver and a doer. Everyone in our extended group of "speaker friends" will tell you she takes action and helps her peers meet new clients. She tells her clients about other speakers, and is always available to give introductions, advice and moral support. She is the "REAL DEAL" when it comes to wanting others to be successful. She does not view life or business as a zero-sum games, but instead believes everyone can find their success path.
She calls herself a "Nerd", but Beth is really one of the "Cool Kids". I am excited to feature her as week #124 of "Cool Things My Friends Do". (She was also an early guest on the "Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do" Podcast!!! Check it out).

These day associations face many challenges. With all the changes in learning, technology, networking, communications, etc... this book helps moves leaders of these important organizations through a process of attaining clarity:
- Evaluate what is controlling and holding back your association
- Expand your ability to embrace and implement alternative solutions
- Use the power of individual and collective belief to believe in a new day for you organization
- Attract and inspire the right staff and volunteers from the heart
- Envision success - live from that place now
- Affirm success in your association and allow it to be
Holly has years of experience in the association industry and holds both her CAE and CMP certifications. She has taken her life experiences and created this great book as a tool to serve others in the industry.
I spend a lot of time working with association executives, and know first hand that these are some of the most creative and hard-working people on earth. As the business climate changes, the ways professionals gather information and engage socially are morphing in unknown directions. However, trade and industry associations are still remaining relevant. The most entrepreneurial and forward thinking groups are thriving. It is fun to work with these clients and see who they are overcoming challenges and preparing for the future.
It is fun to see my friends do cool things like write a book, and I am proud to feature Holly as week #123 in "Cool Things My Friends Do".

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #121) - Bowie High School Band Marches in London Parade
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
The James Bowie High School Band (from Austin, Texas) spent New Years Day marching in the London New Years Day Parade. The members of the band have spent this week practicing and seeing the sights of London.
My niece, Summer, is a drummer in the band, and she and her friends have spent more than a year preparing to make this once in a lifetime trip to the UK to appear in the parade. This is very cool for a high school senior and have the opportunity to take a trip like this with many of her closest friends. Wow.... this is one of those life events you never forget.
In the age of Facebook it has been fun to watch the whole trip as they post photos online. My brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and niece are having a great time, and while the weather is cold, the pictures of London look amazing. The smiles on all their faces tell the whole story.
Congratulations to the Bowie Band, and to my niece, for making Austin proud as they marched on the streets of London. This is a perfect example of "Cool Things" and I am thrilled to have this as week #121 of "Cool Things My Friends Do".
(Links to local news coverage of the band in London. If they post a video I will add it here later)

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #120) - Hal Speed and Computer Science Education Week / Code.org
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
This weekend I bumped into my friend Hal Speed and learned Computer Science Education Week starts today [Dec 8th].
Hal's son and my daughter both attend the same high school, a magnet school that draws some of the smartest kids from all across Austin. The students at this school have the opportunity to pick and choose from many computer science and computer programming classes. However, other children in our city and across the country do not have such an opportunity.
After realizing that many schools do not offer computer programming classes and seeing the number of programming jobs available, Hal started volunteering with Code.org, an organization that believes every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. He's also working with the local school districts to implement Texas House Bill 5 which now requires every high school in Texas to offer computer science (WHAT??? Texas only now, in 2014, is requiring high schools to offer computer courses??? Ouch!).
This week, Code.org has a goal of introducing 100 million students to computer science with a fun, interactive tutorial called the Hour of Code. It's so easy anybody can learn and there's no previous experience required. Throughout the week, students will also be chatting with high-tech celebrities such as Bill Gates, Sheryl Sandberg and Usher, checkout the videos here.
With so much of our lives impacted by technology and software, learning the basics of computer science has become an important skill to have in the 21st century and for the jobs of the future.
Kudos to Hal, and others, for all the work they are doing in this area.

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #119) - Scott Webber and Sean Ackerman Simulcast Their Podcasts
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
Two of my podcasting friends did something very cool on their shows: They simulcasted an episode of both of their shows as one, yet two, podcasts. They held a friendly chat about "10 Ways Successful People Lead Themselves" and both released the show on the same day as a new episode.
Sean Ackerman is the host of You Leading You and Scott Webber is the host of Not Bad for Dad. I know them both through an online community, but met them in-person at the Podcast Movement conference in Dallas earlier this year. I have had the honor of being a guest on both of their shows, and am learning so much from each of them about podcasting and life.
The idea of a simulcast episode is great. I enjoyed hearing the show, but even more I loved the idea of doing a joint session of podcasts. I am now excited to record an episode of "Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do" with another podcaster.
Congrats to Sean and Scott on this interesting idea that they executed in a spectacular manner. It is the perfect example of "Cool Things My Friends Do". I am happy to have them as week #119 in this ongoing blog series.
Jump over to iTunes and find both their shows and if you enjoy them.... leave a positive review (the 5 stars and written reviews matter to the success of a show).

Cool Things My Friends Do (Week #118) - Brian Tannebaum Releases New Book: The Practice
Each week on this blog I enjoy highlighting some of the cool things my friends do in their personal and professional lives.
My friend, Brian Tannebaum, has just released his book, The Practice: Brutal Truths About Lawyers and Lawyering.
Congratulations to Brian. It is very cool to launch a book, and I am thrilled to have him as week #118 of Cool Things My Friends Do. (I think I need to interview him for the Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do Podcast,.... as he is clearly one of the most entrepreneurial lawyers I have ever met).
I met Brian via social media. He lives in Florida, and has a great national reputation in the legal circles. In the early days of my blog and Twitter I would have conversations with him about the topic of "legal marketing". Brian is a lawyer who "gets it" when it comes to what attorneys must do to promote their practices, and he does not like the bull-shit advice that is out there on the subject. Over the years we got to know each other, and last year we had a wonderful dinner while I was in Miami to give a speech.
As its title suggests, The Practice delivers brutal truths about lawyers and lawyering in Tannebaum’s slightly snarky—but always honest—signature style. His opinions are provocative and provide plenty of food for thought, and maybe a laugh or two along the way. This compelling book is an assortment of posts from 'Above the Law' and 'My Law License', two of the most acclaimed law blogs for which Brian has written.
In The Practice, Tannebaum riffs on everything from asking yourself what type of lawyer you want to be, to the most effective way to network and market yourself in an industry where lawyers increasingly over-rely on social media to prove their relevance. It also discusses other important topics, including the proper way to handle referrals, rainmaking, reinventing yourself as a lawyer, personal branding, and much more.
Check out Brian's book in the ABA Bookstore. And if you ever get to meet Brian... he knows good wine!!!
